I'm often asked: "If I block all the draughts, won't I get condensation?"
Great question. Here's the short answer from my Energy Adviser training – plus the real‑world experience that the course didn't always spell out.
Uncontrolled draughts (bad)
Gaps under doors, around windows, through floorboards – these let cold air in and warm air out, wasting your heating money. They make rooms feel chilly and drive up your bills. Draughtproofing them is a smart, cost‑effective move.
Controlled ventilation (good)
Trickle vents, extractor fans, a small window left on the latch – these let stale, moist air escape from kitchens and bathrooms, stopping condensation and mould. You need this background ventilation to keep the air healthy.
My rule of thumb
Stop the draughts you don't need, but keep (or install) vents where moisture happens. That's the balance between a warm home and a healthy one.
